"32 Lives" Will Allow 32-bit Plug-ins to Run in Logic Pro X

Among all the cool improvements to Logic in the latest version, was one restriction that scared off more than a few potential customers, myself included.  With the release of Logic Pro X, the DAW stopped supporting 32-bit plug-ins.  So, those of us who needed maintain compatibility with old projects, or who simply make use of plug-ins that may never be released in 64-bit format, held off on upgrading right away.  I figured this would be enough of a problem for someone software company, and indeed that is the case with the announcement of 32 Lives.  32 Lives promises to allow you to run your 32-bit plug-ins just as if they were 64-bit completely transparently and hassle-free.  The program is still in beta at the moment, but you can actually buy a beta version at reduced price ($69 versus $99) with a free upgrade to the full version when it is released.

A Workaround for 32-bit Plug-ins in Logic X

Thanks to Anthony for bringing this one to my attention.  As you probably know by now, one of the drawbacks of Logic X, is that it will no longer run 32-bit plug-ins.  If you're like me and have a ton of 32-bit plug-ins you rely on that don't have 64-bit versions, that's a bit of a deal breaker.  MacProAudio has posted a tutorial on how to run 32-bit plug-ins in Logic X using AULab.  It's not the most elegant solution, but at least it's an option.  In the meantime, Apple doesn't get my money until they either provide a bridge, or a third party developer comes up with a no-fuss solution.

Mac Pro Video Releases Free Videos of New Logic Features

MacProVideo.com has uploaded a number of free tutorial/overview videos on the new features in Logic Pro X.  If you can get beyond the narrator's bizarre manner of speaking, there's some useful info here.

Suddenly... Logic X

In a surprise move today, Apple announced the launch of Logic Pro X, the latest major update to their flagship music production software.  And, much to the relief of everyone, it doesn't appear to be a dumbing down of the program as users of Final Cut experienced with the initial release of Final Cut X.

Among the new features is Drummer, a virtual session drummer who can accompany your arrangements in one of 15 styles.  While your virtual drummer is playing, you can construct your own custom kit from individual deeply-sampled kit pieces using Drumkit Designer.

Bassist and guitarists will appreciate the new Bass Amp Designer and the several virtual stompboxes added to Pedalboard.

For keyboard and synth enthusiasts, there's the new Vintage Keyboards instrument which features modeled B3, electric piano, and clav sounds.  If synths are more your thing, the new Retro Synth recreates the vintage synth sounds of the 80's not only with classic subtractive synthesis, but with FM and Wavetable modes as well.  A new Arpeggiator and various MIDI plug-ins allow you to work with your softsynths in new ways as well.

The new Flexpitch feature allows you to edit the pitch of audio as if it was MIDI in a piano-roll editor.  A brand new sound library and the ability to control Logic X with your iPad are some of the other interesting additions.  Logic X is available in the Apple App Store for $199.

Logic Users Relax: The Sky Isn't Falling..

Panic spread throughout the Logic users community over the weekend about the rumor that Apple may have chosen to abandon its professional DAW, Logic.  The rumor started on a ProTools-oriented blog called ProTools Expert.  The article claimed that Apple had "decimated" the Pro Audio Applications team in Europe.

As it turned out, all that was being decimated was a marketing department and the Pro Audio team was doing very fine, thank you.  As confirmation, the MacRumors website published a statement from Apple Product Marketing Chief Xander Soren who said:

"As the lead for our music creation apps, I always want to hear what our users are thinking. I want to assure you the team is still in place and hard at work on the next version of Logic Pro. "

You'd think Apple users would be used to false rumor after false rumor about the company's plans that they wouldn't fall for this so easily, but sometimes panic gets the best of us.

A Lifesaver for Long-time Logic Users

So, about a month from now, my band and I will be embarking on a 7 week tour of the U.S. promoting my new album.  As a special treat for our fans in LA, we're doing a second show where we'll be performing the entire 2001 album that sort of "broke" us into the scene, ironically entitled "Failure".

So, over the past week, my plan was to load up all the old Logic files and give everything a fresh mix given that I've had over a decade of production experience and learning since recording it.  The problem is, this album was done in Logic 5, and the current version of Logic won't open files that old due to a radical change in the file format.  You can use Logic 7 to convert files to the new format, but for whatever reason, I couldn't get it to install on my system.  Panic set it.  This was potentially a big show for us and now it looked like it might not be possible to do.

Luckily for me, an enterprising gent named Greg saw a void for some sort of third party conversion service and started eLogic-X, which does precisely that.  The service works like this... you contact Greg via his website and send him JUST the old Logic files (not the audio, etc.).  Greg then sends you a sample conversion for you to test, and if it works on your system, you pay him via PayPal and he does the rest for super cheap (between $2.50 and $3.50 per file depending on the quantity).

Less than 24 hours after my initial panic, I had all the converted files working in Logic Pro without a hitch and was back on target for our special show.  If anyone out there is looking for this kind of service, I highly recommend it.

Apple Talks About Next Version of Logic: Logic Pro X

Looks like we have the first hints at what the next version of Logic (to be called Logic Pro X).  Not much is leaking at this point, but apparently the team working on it is very conscious of the type of backlash we recently saw against the dumbing down of Final Cut.  They've apparently said that there is no plan to turn Logic into Garage Band, as many have feared.  The new version of Logic will apparently only be available via the App store as had been the trend recently.  According to the sources, Logic Pro X is approaching completion, so it shouldn't be too much longer before we know more.

Logic's Pedalboard: Not Just for Guitars

One of the new plug-ins that showed up in the last major revision of Logic was Pedalboard. For some strange reason, it seems as if it hardly ever gets a mention, and that's a shame, as it's really a very fun sound design tool.

Sure, it was made with guitars in mind, but it is equally great for mangling your synths, drums, vocals, or whatever else you care to throw at it. I've long been a proponent of guitar stomp boxes as a source of unique sounds, and pedalboard gives you a virtual array of these which can be arranged in any combination and order you like. Distortion, fuzz, ring modulation, wah filters, chorus, phaser, flanger... you name it, if it's a type of stomp box, you're likely to find it available here. When you take into account these particular effects combos only take up a single insert and that you can apply as many further plug-ins as your processor can handle, you can see how powerful the possibilities are.

So the next time you're looking for a way to add a unique touch to your synths, don't pass over stuff like Pedalboard just because it was made for guitars. The results might surprise you.

  • Resolves an issue in which moving a region to a different Arrange track assigned to the same channel strip could cause automation to be deleted.
  • Drag-copy of automation curves now works as expected on grouped tracks.
  • Moving an automation node that lies between two other nodes of the same value to the left or right no longer causes it to decrease by -0.1 db in value.
  • Resolves an issue introduced in Logic 9.1 in which performing Undo after using the "Move Visible Track Automation to Region" command would delete the automation.

  • Performing Undo after flattening Takes on a group of flexed tracks now works as expected.
  • Takes no longer sometimes display as soloed when their parent Take folder is disclosed but not selected.
  • Resolves an issue in which moving a take region with Quick Swipe Comping disabled sometimes did not move the corresponding take region(s) in tracks within the same Edit Group.
  • Fixes an issue in which dividing a take region that had been created by merging several take regions together could cause the area to the right of the edit to disappear.
  • Resolves an issue in which importing a Take folder into a project with a matching track could cause existing takes to be removed from Take folders in the original track.

Add Some Beef to Your Beats

If you're doing club music, you know that getting the low end just right is extremely important. Of course, you're much better off spending some time auditioning sounds at the beginning to find a sound that is close to what you want already than trying to whip it into shape with plug-ins, but sometimes you still need to do some tweaking. It's no surprise that there are a number of bass enhancement plug-ins out there, each of which work in slightly different ways and vary in quality. But if all you need to do is add some sub to your kicks, you probably already have the tools to do so.

I'll be working in Logic, but you should be able to replicate this fairly easily on any DAW that allows side-chaining and includes a noise gate.

1. Select the track containing the kick drum you want to beef up. Side-chaining in Logic needs to be done via buses, so we need to send our kick drum to a bus. Under the SENDS section of your track's channel, select Bus 1 from the drop down menu and dial the send knob all the way up.

2. We don't need to actually hear the signal coming through the bus, though, so on the channel strip for Bus 1, change the OUTPUT from STEREO OUT to NO OUTPUT. You'll find this menu right below the name of the bus. Now we have the kick drum being sent audibly through our audio channel, and being sent silently to Bus 1.

The reason we don't want to hear the output of the bus is because we're just going to be using it as a control signal, not an audio signal. SIDE-CHAINING is the process of using the audio from one channel to control some aspect of a plug-in on another channel. This is most commonly used in dance music where a kick drum is side-chained with a compressor on a pad or strings to create a pumping effect. We're going to do something similar here.

3. First we need something to side-chain, though. So create a new instrument track and insert an instance of any synth that has a good sine-wave on it. If you can't think of any and are using Logic, just called up an instance of EXS-24. It defaults to a sine wave sample. Record a long, sustained note. Be careful to choose a note that fits the key of your song. This is where the beef if going to come from, so having an 'off' note will really make a mess of your low end.

4. On the channel strip of your sine wave instrument, insert a side-chainable noise gate. I'm using Logic's included NOISE GATE. Firstly, we need to select a source for our side-chaining. So hit the drop down menu in the upper right hand corner of Noise Gate and select BUS 1, where we sent our kick drum. You'll need to experiment with different settings, but initially start out with your ATTACK at o, your HOLD at 60ms, and your release at 12ms. It's especially important to have a bit of a release at the end, as this prevents annoying clicks. Now, press play and adjust the THRESHOLD value until you can hear your sine wave coming through right beneath the kick drum, hopefully adding the sub energy you're looking for.

Don't stop here, though. Try effecting your sine wave channel in different ways - overdrive it or saturate it to add harmonics, sculpt it to perfection with EQ, etc.

Taste the Rainbow: Practical Use for Logic's Color Palette

I'm currently working on some music for a video game. I can't really reveal too many details, but the process basically involves creating loopable pieces of music that can be smoothly cross-faded between according to what's happening in the game, thus creating a more 'real time' soundtrack.

This obviously requires some thinking not ordinarily involved in writing music - namely, that the pieces need to be in the same tempo and key to allow cross fading to sound natural. So in the process of composing these pieces, I needed to be able to compare them to one another easily to check that compatibility. As you might imagine, this can quickly become an organizational nightmare. Enter Logic's "Color Palette" feature.

The Color Palette function allows you to assign colors to specific audio or MIDI regions in your arrange window. In this case, I arranged the colors according to the different pieces so I could quickly and easily know which regions belonged to which pieces. Obviously, there are tons of other uses for this feature, but any time you need to get things organized in an otherwise chaotic arrangement, this is the perfect tool for the job.

Assigning colors to regions is dead simple:

1. Select the region or regions you want to color.
2. Control-click over the regions to bring up a menu and select "Open Color Palette". (You can also bring this menu up by right-clicking the regions if you have a two-button mouse,
3. Select the color you want to change the regions to.

  • Logic Control or Mackie Control hardware control surfaces no longer switch to plug-in edit view when a plug-in on slots 8-15 is removed.

MIDI Editing

  • Resolves an issue introduced in Logic 9.1 where using the Marquee tool to trim the end of a MIDI region could extend the number of loops for regions earlier in the same track.
  • The Piano Roll now updates as expected to show the currently selected MIDI take.
  • Resolves an issue in Logic 9.1.1 which could cause the Score to not display all notes from a region that had been split with the Scissors tool.
  • The appearance of downward slurs and ties has been improved in the Score window.
  • When pasting MIDI events into the Arrange area, the playhead no longer jumps unexpectedly to a position far to the right of the end of the pasted content.

  • It is possible again to copy and paste sequences between Voices within an Ultrabeat pattern.
  • A Software Instrument with a Send set to Post Pan no longer loses audio output when the Aux it sends to is soloed, and the Software Instrument’s pan is adjusted.
  • Software Instrument tracks with the AUNetReceive plug-in no longer exhibit excessive latency.
  • The Noise Gate no longer creates audible clicks while processing audio with the plug-in GUI open.
  • Double-clicking an insert slot will close the associated plug-in if it is open and set to Link Mode.
  • In the EXS Editor, a mouse roll over of an audio file name now displays the full path for the file.
  • The EXS Editor now properly displays all Groups even those that have the same name.

File Handling and Management

  • Resolves an issue which sometimes caused the text after a period in a plug-in setting name to be lost on the first save of the setting.
  • Resolves an issue from Logic 9.1.1 which forced exported MIDI files to have a .logic extension rather than the .mid extension.
  • Import of folder tracks from other projects now works reliably.
  • Bank and Patch names in Multi-instruments now import correctly when using the Track Import feature.
  • Resolves an issue which could cause the Track Import window to become non-functional in certain rare cases.
