Great Article on the Loudness War

There's a really good article on the Loudness War on ProRec and how the author believes it will eventually end. Not sure I agree with his conclusions, but the "cola wars" analogy he uses to describe your initial reaction to how music sounds versus how you feel after extended listening is really spot on.

i've been using mp3Gain for a long time cuz I listen to everything from bach to infected mushroom. Problem is it doesn't always work. it doesn't seem to work at all on radiohead's stuff

what are y'all using to match levels on mp3s?

Volume control... ;)

For a mix CD, I'll open mp3's in an audio editor and manually adjust the gain, if needed. I'm with the "don't trust auto-adjusting" camp...

I agree with Rip Rowan that CD is doomed and frankly I'm surprised it's lasted as long as it has. Still - I was thinking DVD-A would catch on, but apparently it flopped? I had no idea...I just thought people were being stubborn about it...
