A Change of Course

So after very seriously considering going the Hackintosh route, I've decided to play it safe. I've had enough computer problems over the last couple of months that I'm not really in the mood to spend any more time tinkering "under the hood" just to get things to work correctly. I'd kind of be screwed if it needed repairs (do you take it to a PC repair place or a Mac place?), and there's a pretty good possibility I would've been stuck on a single OS version, at least longer than I would on the real deal. I'm not one to jump on a new OS the moment it comes out, but for this blog, sometimes I need to stay current in order to review stuff (like I had to recently for DCAM Synth Squad). Maybe I'll give it a try further down the road. But for now, I'm looking forward to having a reliable computer that's not going to give me an ulcer.

But...computer ulcers and/or aneurysms make you a MAN...it's what separates us from the amoebas...or something.

Here's a sick idea...Ebay your broken, autographed Mac to cover the cost. It might only be $20 but it's better than throwing it in the garbage...You never know...

Hehe...that should read "help cover"...

Hope the new Mac Pro gives you a less troubled time than the G5 machine!
I had the exact same problem with my G5 (i.e. it just inexplicably died), but I'm choosing to go down the PC route again now, as I'm in no position to afford another Mackintosh that may or may not give me grief...

Wow, heard some musicians are really considering hackintosh. Know one guy who's MAX/MSP freak and he's dreaming of hackintosh. Interesting to see what is going to be the result of all this rush!

Seamus - Honestly, the G5 worked flawlessly for the first 4 years I had it. Not a single problem and the only time it crashed was almost always caused by an web browser issue. But from what I've read, the 2ghz dual G5's (which is what I have) were really problematic, so I don't think it's a G5 issue in general.

Joshua - I do intend to try and sell it once I've transferred everything off the drives, but I wouldn't dream of devaluing it by signing it. haha

$(new macbook) + $(new quadcore from qos) <= $(new macpro)

...YMMV (no, i don't think so)

you'll be happy either way. poorer one way.

@ Tom - Yeah, mine was the 2ghz model as well! I've been reading up on it and that particular model has an overall fail-rate of 1 in 4.
Unbelievable.
Eitherway, it would cost me over £600 to replace the logic board on the system, which is more than the damn thing cost me in the first place!
