1 More Non-Musical Purchase That Will Improve Your Life in the Studio

Thanks to reader Mangadrive for pointing out a HUGE omission I made in yesterday's post about non-musical purchases that will improve your music-making experience in the studio: a big monitor.

LCD monitors in 20"+ sizes are getting cheaper all the time, and once you switch over to one of these, you'll wonder how you ever lived without one. If anything, this one should've been number one on that list. Trust me, you won't regret it.

I'm thinking of getting a widescreen LCD - would this be recommended in a DAW computer setting? Anyone?

Really anything your computer will support that will give you more screen real estate gets a thumbs up from me.

Dell has some good sales every month. I got a 21.5" 1080p wide screen monitor for $150. Highly recommended for the price and they included a 3 year warranty. I took a Dell wide screen apart at work and found that Samsung makes the internals.

The best recording computer I ever had was a 13 inch laptop. It was small enough that it didn't get in the way. It was light enough that i could take it anywhere.

Then again, I don't use a DAW!

Samsung 2443BW is a cheap way to do it. It can also rotate 90 degrees. I both 2, and both ended up with 'lines'. Samsung sent me 2 replacements.

I bought a 30" DELL LCD screen for the price of a much smaller Apple one & it is brilliant! I sue it with a 24" wide screen DELL, so the 30" runs ProTools etc and the wide screen is for QTs... one good thign witht he 24" is that it has video input too, so can switch it to watch TV... FWIW I think I would rather have one 30" screen than two smaller ones...

Being a multimedia guy at work, I recommend 2 monitors for making music.

Keeping my DAW mixer open on 1 monitor at all times helps me immensely. Even if you start out with a 15" second monitor, give it a try.

I don't really tend to advertise much, but I'm pretty dependent on Newegg for my computer needs. They usually have some remarkable deals and recently have had some on great monitors.

As far as a DAW you really don't have to get fancy with statistics other than screen space itself. The more the merrier. If you are into video making, and gaming like myself then you want to take a look at the "MS" response time they have usually under statistics. This is where the LESS the merrier. I wouldn't recommend anything over 5ms for gaming and video else you get a lot of screen tearing and such in these applications. Also maximum resolution supported is important because obviously you don't want a giant monitor that gets stuck in 1400x900, which defeats the purpose of having it in the first place. Again the more the merrier here.

Unfortunately there is a downside to buying an LCD over the net. Its sort of like getting a pair of shoes in that each manufacturer varies on what they actually advertise. Also some of the dimensions and features may not make too much sense unless you actually be there to SEE the results that some of them make. Also you run the same risk of getting something with a dead pixel, but this is still a risk when making a physical purchase. Thankfully places like Newegg have a decent RMA system where things like this can be replaced at no cost if something does go wrong. If you can go out to your electronics store and actually buy one physically, then do so. For those of us like me that live in the middle of freaking nowhere...there is always the net!

I figure the screen space would be a bonus with a widescreen, I was just wondering if there are any technical complications that anyone has experienced...

None whatsoever. Its actually a huge bonus when working with tracking and big jobs with lots of mixer arrangement to be done.

In my studio I'm using two Acer screens with a resolution of 1600 by 900 each. They were on a deal for EUR 100,-/piece last month and they do a fine job.
