Open Thread Friday: Your Least Favorite Synth/Electronic Sound

Woohoo! It's Friday, kids! Today's topic: what is your least favorite synth or electronic sound? Every electronic musician I know, no matter how into synths they are, has at least one famous synth sound that is like nails on a chalkboard to them. For me, it's a toss up between the DX-7 Rhodes preset that was like a plague in the 80's and the Roland TR-808 'cowbell' sound. So what's yours? It can be a synth preset, a sound from a drum machine, a sound used in a famous song...

Ok, I have to say I like the 808 Cowbell. But anyway, I think there is nothing I like less than a SuperSaw. Just yesterday Joey was playing me a bevy of saws on his Virus and I get it but, seriously, in the context of a song, every super song sound the same. It may have a place but I DONT need a supersaw patch on every synth/softsynth I buy.

I also hate the 808 snare.

I gotta say, I rather like those DX series twinkling FM sounds. Always did. I can't stand 90s style 'phat' stcaked-saw sounds, like those Roland JX presets used heavily in 'tarnce' productions of the era.

its got to be the "what the?" preset from the juno 2, aka Mentazm, hoover etc used in joey beltrams "Mentazm" & the prodigys charlie.

The 808 snare and the "what the ?" preset from the juno 2 too.
I just can't bear famous overused sounds.
It sounds like second hand music.

Pitched up female vocals in commonly used in "hip-hop". Grr.

I love all of those sounds...the Hoover, the 808 cowbell, the DX7 rhodes. I like familiar sounds. I really dislike FM synth-brass, but only in some contexts.

Sometimes, or in some cases, clap sounds or Supersaws get on my nerves.

But I DEFINITELY hate that Orchestra Hit Sounds you find on many "old" samplers!

haha tom you are such a hater! i barely ever use supersaw sounds anyway!

for me it has to be the open square wave portamento lead thing that every indie band in the world does

Haha... this thread is cracking me up. I can't say I disagree with a lot of them!

*Any* 90's era synth preset named "Guitar Lead" or "Funky Bass"

* The Roland R-8 "spark" preset(it's a metal pipe hit)...I still hear that sample regularily in TV ads to this day.

* That %#$@ brass patch used in Europe's "the final countdown". Tom- If I ever fall into a coma, promise me that you;ll play than in my hospital room. I guarentee you no matter what I will immediately wake up spouting a string of obscenities that will embarass us both.

* Additional dishonorable mention goes to the EMU "sledgehammer" shakuhachi flute sample....Though bonus points go out to The Cure for excellent use of the Sitar from the same library in "If only tonight we could sleep".

Steve said...

To clarify-the Roland R-8 "spark" sample has nothing repeat nothing to do with Tom's excellent song of the same name. Pre-order the single *now*.

I have to 100% fully agree with the DX7 Rhodes. For years that sound has driven me nuts - it automatically ruins a song for me. I just hear nothing but the Doogie Howser theme when it pops up.

Also, any 'slap bass' preset from a digital synth can go. You know, the 'Seinfeld' theme sound.

And anything called 'tubular bells' or 'carillon'.

Tom said...

@Steve - How DARE you?! My new single is totally about my deep-seated devotion to the R-8 "Spark" sample and how it lead me to a better life! ; )

But yeah, I forgot about that one... I think it was on every single Rave song in the 90's

yeah id have to say any distorted guitar sound from numerous '90s rom synths. and please dont touch the pitchbend while playing it.

I don't know if I can add anything but I'll give additional negative points to "Orchestra hits" (at least the way they are usually used), DX-7 Rhodes (or almost any Rhodes sound for me) or freaking clap noises. Whenever I get a new drum sample kit, I immediately seek out all the claps and DESTROY THEM. What an obnoxiously overused and hideous sound *gag*

Also, just about any fake guitar sound in its raw form...

Any sound used in any Lady Gaga track. I want to poke my eardrums with a sharp stick.

Yes! Yes! yes!
And also that commercial hip-hop guy, can't rememeber the name... with auto-tuned/timestretched vocals

It's gotta be the Vanguard 'Scream4More' patch. The nippiest synth preset of all time, and I think pretty much every Euro-club-EBM act has used it at least once... urrrrgh...

I cannot abide orchestra hits either but the synth sound I hate most is that airy tinkling D-50 type of sound heard so often in the late 80's often drenched in cheap reverb. Disgusting.
Bell tree also will have me reaching for the "next" button quicker than you can say "oooo girl..." The smarmy hallmark of r&b sex music.

that high pitched bell sound from the song "Truth" on the album Meta by Assemblage 23. It makes my neighbor's dogs bark in an angry and insane way. I can't even listen to that song without causing a riot in my neighborhood.

[disclaimer, Meta is one of my top 5 favorite albums of the 2000's. My house is also very close to my next-door neighbor.]

Rob - Haha... It's all part of my plan to take over the world with an army of dogs.
