Ensoniq ESQ1 | demo (1 of 2) by syntezatory.prv.pl

I love this guy's demos. He actually programs decent sounds, the riffs he plays are catchy, and the video editing is really clever and well done (may be disturbing to the wimpier among you out there...). The ESQ-1 is a really underrated synth. I see them going for $150 and less on eBay all the time and I think it's just because people don't know about it...

This guy goes to a lot of trouble to to make demos - pretty cool though. At the moment, it looks like the only synth of this model on eBay is at $500, though.

I love the ESQ-1. I never owned one, but I worked on one in my Intro to MIDI & Synthesis class at Community College. The rest of the class had these more modern Yamaha digital synths, and I got saddled witht he beat-up old Ensoniq. I was disappointed until I heard it. Fun stuff.

tom, as much as i love your appreciation for jexus's demos, we should really not talk about why the synths he uses are so cheap

that raises prices!

wow really cool...if i could find one for $150 I'd pick one up. I haven't delved into the world of hardware synths yet (I'm a late bloomer in this type of thing so I've only worked with soft synths). would this be a good starter, or would you recommend something different for a good starter synth? I'd like to get a nice analog with lots of knobs that i wouldn't have to sell my kidney for. Since i think it would be a lot easier to program then digital synths (I'm thinking of the micron particularly.)

Point taken, Joey! ; )

Darkmaer - The ESQ-1 is a digital synth, it just has analog filters. It's not terribly tough to program, but I'd recommend something with knobs to start with. It's just a much more pleasurable way of programming sounds, in my opinion. That said, you could do a lot worse for a first synth than the ESQ.

yeah i would think knobs would be a much more enjoyable experience too. thanks, I might have to do a little shopping around pretty soon and see what i can dig up.
