The Sounds of Ice
Saw this article over on BoingBoing this weekend. A sound designer in Berlin made recordings of the ice on a frozen lake expanding and contracting and what he captured is surprisingly eerie. Check it out to hear a sample and read up a bit on the phenomena that creates it.

For those who may be interested in a bit of DIY, here is an article* detailing the construction of a cheap contact microphone. Take this mic, place it in a tightly wrapped zip lock bag, and freeze it in a block of ice to make your own ice recordings. Just a thought. Enjoy.
