I got a stylophone as a Christmas gift last year and I loved it. I don't think it sound annoying at all. This black stylophone definitely look better than the one that I have. Also the ebay link doesn't work.
This is not annoying - its all about retro style!
There is a video of Japan's Koishi playing the black stylophone at the official Studio Black Edition Page:
Stylophone Studio Black Edition
Koishi is very cool in Japan!
oh yes, annoying. got one for the man's stocking and it has irritated me ever since! ;)
kinda cool though, but noisy--not necessarily in the good way.
I actually saw David Bowie play one of these live (at the end of the song Warsawa) when he was part of the Area Festival tour a few years ago. At the end of the song he actually gave a quick explanation of the device, said it was the sound at the beginning of Major Tom, and played the first few bars of the song before stopping and saying something like "...if you think I'm going to play THAT you're crazy..."
Doop...the song is called Space Oddity... Major Tom is a Peter Shilling song if I remember right
Hi Tom,
Yeah, my brother did have one of these, together with a Rolf Harris fronted manual. A few years back when I was circuit bending my Casio SK1 I looked in my parents' loft for it, to no avail, probably for the best.
I also found a stylophone VSTi, but again the gods were smiling on me, and it dodn't work.
;)
Paul. Italy.
Yeah, that one.
Cheaper on ThinkGeek:

The one in Thinkgeek is not black though. That's why it's cheaper. The black one is the limited edition.
I bought the Studio Black Edition as I collect all things Stylophone. It is the same inside as the recent Black and White model but the smooth sand blast finish and all black is very cool. The detail is better, packaging is very nice and its a limeted edition so it was a very worthwhile purchase.
Wow, there's so much worthwhile information here!
Thanks so much for the article, pretty useful data.
