to be fair there are like 50 zillion perfectly capable 808 vstis and the like...
someday when im rich i'd love to have a little cv-based setup with a couple 303s and a 808/909 and some tape
i have used the 808/909 sound in a shit-ton of tracks tho, always a great standby, and so deeply imbued into the collective subconcious, like an amen loop

It's true, there are a ton of 808 soundalike VSTs and it isn't as if there aren't a metric bucketload of samples available, but there really is a difference with the real thing. I've ever owned one, but I've had a number of friends who did, so I've had ample chance to play with one in person and there is a weight and presence to it that I don't think the software versions have quite captured yet. Plus, like the 303, the programming interface is part of the experience.
