By an incredible coincidence, I was just reading about this yesterday. If you've heard of Lunetta CMOS based DIY synths, this is sort of the same idea, but originally built for teaching digital logic. The thing about digital logic, you're basically switching a lot of 0 and 1, and if you do it fast enough (or slow enough, for those of use in the GHz age) you get various square waves...

Oh, and of course you could use it to seriously futz with gate and trigger signals for your modular...
