When a bunch of ex-Ableton employees splintered off to start their own company, many wondered what the guys at Bitwig were up to. Now we have an answer: Bitwig Studio. The company describes it as a multi-platform music creation environment for production, performance, and DJing. This looks like a very ambitious project indeed! You can check out the details on their website.
(In the interest of full disclosure, my record label released a CD by Burikusu!!! who happen to be headed up by Bitwig founder Claes Johansen. Check it out!)

Initially this seemed pretty exciting. But after a few hours of staring at the screenshots I forgot what I was excited about.
My initial thoughts: http://www.synnack.com/blog/post/48/bitwig-studio-announced
I'm wondering if there are going to be legal issues for them regarding some of the interface designs...
With the promised IP/LAN based collaboration and recording there is some potential. But those will be vapor for who knows how long. The Linux support is nice, but very niche market for now. Not seeing any real innovation here. I'm thinking that the sell point will be price. The market is too saturated with high priced DAWs. If they want success, they will have to undercut the market at sub 70€ and be full featured or this will have a hard sell. Products like Reaper and Renoise have a hold on the "cost effective" market already, but aren't well known outside of some circles. Hopefully the Abelton pedigree will work in their favor.
I wish them the best and if its priced right, I'll buy it just to fool around with it for a bit.
