Depeche Mode Completes New Album

The LA Times is reporting that Depeche Mode have completed their new, as of yet untitled album for release this spring (last I heard, April). I heard the two leaked snippets awhile back, and they sounded pretty good and very electronic, so I'm looking forward to this. I just hope they have a better job done on the mastering this time out...

c'mon Tom, they haven't made a really decent album since Violator... SoFaD was alright but in your heart you know it wasn't that good. a few decent songs apiece on each of the rest of their albums. but the magic is missing. to me they've never been the same since Alan Wilder left.

Funnily enough his only solo works that were any good were Hydrology and Bloodline (both made whilst still with DM) his other solo works are rather self indulgent and rather disjointed...

While I agree they aren't the same band without Alan Wilder, I actually quite liked "Playing the Angel". "Exciter" was a complete waste, though.

Have you heard the last Recoil? I thought it was quite cool. I couldn't get into the stuff with the spoken word people on previous releases, but just the production of the new one alone blew me away.

granted, shimmering production. stellar. but please Mr Wilder could you just write a TUNE already... and what is with the old 1930's style blues guy all ovet he shop??? Bukka White was cool for one track, but move the game on a bit please... or maybe just bring back Dougie McCarthy and Toni Halliday.

I really like Playing the Angel, although it doesn't appear to be a fan favorite over at iTunes. I don't think they liked all the noisy sounds (and boy are there a lot!) I'm also interested to hear some more Gahan-written tunes, if there are some.

Line - My, so cranky! haha I contend that songs like 'Precious' (especially if you know what it's about) and 'A Pain I'm Used To' are fine additions to the band's history. Sure, they're not releasing album after album of music as brilliant as Black Celebration, but name me ANY band that has been around for nearly 30 years who is still at their creative peak. As for the Recoil album... Why is a blues vocalist only 'good' for one track, but Dave Gahan is fine for every track on an album? Open your mind! : )

Tom, I meant that something experimental is cool once, but then can get tedious. "electro blues for bukka white" had a great vibe and it really worked, but the stuff off of the last album just seemed cobbled together, just trying too hard to be "avant garde".

since you posted this thread i've gotten out a bunch of my Mode albums and i still marvel at the beauty and sadness of songs like Lie to Me and Shake the Diease, the twisted darkness of songs like It doesn't matter two, or just the exhuberance of Never let me down again. Nothing lasts for ever, it's true. No band remains great. Like all truly magical things. Great art flourishes and then wanes. Part of me just wishes they would stop and i could just look upon their past..."like a fly in amber", preserved forever.

wow...that was deep...must have been that dodgy Guyanese roti i just had a while back...

I agree it would be nice if Wilder would throw us a bone and do a Recoil album more in the style of what we know and love him for best, but I also realize he has to do what makes him happy, and with the bad taste being in Depeche left in his mouth, I can understand why he needs to move on.

I don't know what Guyanese Roti is, but I bet it's good!

you Seattle guys gotta get out more...

when you visit Toronto next i'll take you down to Gandhi's and get you a lamb roti that will blow your head off... don't worry the dodgy one wasn't from there.

Sounds good! I can't say I know of any Guyanese places here in Seattle.
