A South African Take on Joy Division
Here's a track called "Control" by South African producer Spoek Mathambo, a re-interpretation of Joy Division's classic "She's Lost Control". Now I think I've heard everything!

A Side of Mozart You Might Not Have Known About
People like to complain about how low-brow culture has become. The radio is cluttered with profanity-laden hip-hop tracks, misogynistic rock songs, and club hits dripping with enough sexual innuendo that they'd glow under a black light. But all of this longing for the "good old days" is usually based more on selective memory than it is reality. Case in point, Mozart's song "Leck mich im Arsch".
If you can't guess the translation based on the title, it's basically "Lick me in the Arse". Most scholars believe that this was a party piece that he wrote for his friends' amusement. A sanitized version with drastically altered lyrics called "Let Us Be Glad" was published after Mozart's death. It wasn't until 1991 that the original manuscript was unearthed and we all learned what a dirty bugger Mozart was.

Umberto
My friend Scott turned me onto this project the other night. The project of Kansas City's Matt Hill, Umberto makes astonishingly authentic-sounding cinematic synth music in the vein of 70's horror score luminaries like John Carpenter and Goblin. If you listened to this without knowing it was made recently, you'd swear it was made in a smokey studio with a bunch of bearded Italian guys twisting knobs of impossibly complicated modulars in 1975. The composition, synth sounds, and lo-fi production is all incredibly dead-on. Anyway, fun stuff. Break it out at your next Halloween party or goat sacrifice and impress your friends.

Free Sample Friday: Reno Wind
Last weekend I drove down to Reno with my friend Craig to drop his dog off with a friend before he and his wife move to Zambia. On the day we left, Reno was hit with an impressive wind storm, so I got out my Zoom H2 and decided to record some of it. It's not the cleanest recording in the world, but you might be able to find something within to feed to Absynth, Alchemy, or the like as raw material for sample manipulation.GO GET IT!
