Italian Interview With Alan Wilder

Via depechemodeitalia.com:

Obviously I am a big fan of Alan Wilder, but what makes me the happiest about this is to hear my friend Daniel Myer's Architect project get a mention as Wilder's favorite band of the moment. Daniel, I love you man, but this kind of makes me want to kick you in the balls a little bit. (In all seriousness, Daniel is the most talented musician I've ever met and is so criminally underappreciated...)

Wave Alchemy Releases Drum Machines 02

Wave Alchemy has released volume 2 in their Drum Machines sample library (expect a review soon). Here's what they have to say about it...

"Drum Machines 02 bundles together three of Wave Alchemy’s micro series packs - 808 Drums, 909 Drums and Drum Fire and offers them at a reduced price of £24.99 (saving you £5!)

Offering over 1500 expertly recorded drum samples, Drum Machines 02 delves deep into the circuitry of the legendary Roland TR-808, TR-909 and lesser-known Drumfire DF-2000 and MFB Schlagzwerg Drum Machines.

Each Drum sample has undergone a careful recording process using a unique, high-end signal chain to capture the depth and character of the original devices. Further outboard processing, precision editing and creative sample layering brings these classic machines firmly into the present giving you a "modern take on a classic sound".

First Waveformless Video Tutorial: Using Logic's Mute Tool for More Interesting Synth Lines

Alright, before we even get into this, keep in mind it's my first attempt at something like this. So far, I haven't found a screen casting program that really feels like a fit. ScreenFlow is great but doesn't work with my MOTU 828 mkII for some reason, so I used Snapz Pro, which is alright, but won't let me import the files into Final Cut so I can use the snazzy intro slate I created or otherwise make it visually more interesting. This'll be an ongoing experiment, I suppose.

Anyway, dull visuals aside, I hope you find this tutorial useful and that it sparks a new idea or two... (Oh and select the 720p option for best sound and video...)

Roland TR-808 on Ebay

Don't get me wrong, I've played with a real 808 before and it's true that samples don't do this thing justice, but I can't believe the prices I see these fetching these days!

Orbital to Return with First New Material in 6 Years

Via Side-Line:

Exciting news for fans of Orbital - the British duo will release a new single, "Don't Stop Me" / "The Gun is Good" on June 20th. The new tracks will be available on vinyl 12" (remember those, kids?) and digitally.

I was a huge fan of these guys back in the 90's. One year, my band was playing a festival in Sweden called Arvika. The promoters flew us into Norway and sent vans to come retrieve us, as it was cheaper. So the van arrives to pick us up and along with our crew is a British guy who introduces himself as "Phil". It's not until almost the end of the hour long drive that I realized it was Phil Hartnoll. I didn't say anything because, frankly, what am I going to say that he hasn't heard a million times, but I have to admit I squealed like a schoolgirl on the inside.

Free Sample Friday: SQ-80 Ganks

Today's selection is what used to be one of my favorite bass sounds I'd programmed for my old SQ-80 back in the day. It's very digital sounding and can add a nice bite to other bass sounds when layered. (The name of the patch was inspired by the liner notes of a Shriekback album that listed not only the gear used, but the name of the synth patches they used which pleased the hell out of me for some reason...)

8 mono 24-bit/44.1k WAV samples of the C and G keys for 4 octaves.
