Free Analog Transistor Drum Samples

Rythmic Robot has released "Jacky" a free sample set of transistor-produced drum samples from an old combo organ.  All you need to do is head on over to their website, and drop them a line with the subject line "JACKY".

Here's what they have to say:

"This was supposed to be a combo transistor organ with onboard rhythms, but before we could sample the keyboard sounds it died on us. There was smoke and everything Shit! So... all we've got is the drum sounds, and rather than trash them we're giving them away free in the form of a little Kontakt instrument Smile

They're probably not going to set the world on fire, but they're fun and have a retro transistor-combo-organ kind of charm to them. The rhythms are syncable and combinable, and there are a handful of round-robined drum hits to play with. "

A "Real World" TR-808?

MR-808 - mechanic drum robot from Sonic Robots on Vimeo.

"Let's get physical: MR-808 is the first drum robot that reproduces the drum sounds of the 80s - in the real world.
The robot installation MR-808 is a replica of the famous 1980s electronic drum machine TR-808 – with robots playing the drum sounds! I (Moritz Simon Geist) have been playing electronic music for several years now, and at some place I was bored of the electronic music production process. With binary logic, everything is possible.
So I decided to go back to the roots of sound generation – the physical sound generation – but combine it with the electronic music structure we like so much.
I liked the idea so much, that I couldn’t stop building my own drum robots, and ended up replacing all the electronic sounds of a whole drum computer, placed in a 3,3 x 1,7m² case. I am very proud to present the “MR-808” – a mechanic replica of the famous 1980s electronic drum machine TR-808!

Free Sample Friday: Phone Drums

Today's Free Sample Friday comes via my belief that everything sounds more interesting if you use recording methods that color your sound.  With that in mind, today's selection consists of some Alesis SR-16 sounds sampled into an Ensoniq EPS-16+ and then recorded using my iPhone's Voice Memo function from my studio monitors.

The result is noisy, clipped, out of phase, and just plain lo-fi sounding.  Not the type of sound you'll use on every track, but perhaps a little something different to add some spice in the right spot.  I also included a sample of some body noise picked up by the phone when I was changing hand position that could be used as a faux vinyl crackle, or even an IDM rhythm if you warped it right in Live.

26 mono WAV samples @24-bit/44.1k weighing in around 1.25 MB.
