Native Instruments Teases New Synth
Native Instruments have released some teasers for a new synth they're releasing with little info given other than "A Revolution is Coming" and it'll be "One Synth to Rule Them All". Oddly, from the sound clips, the "revolution" sounds like a modeled analog synth. Sounds decent, but I'm not hearing anything revolutionary so far. My guess? Given Native Instrument's foray into hardware in recent years, it'll be a softsynth with a hardware controller of some type. What do you think it'll be?

Cableguys Releases Free Panning Plug-in
Cableguys have released a free plug-in for Windows and OSX users called PanCake. PanCake is designed to perform everything from simple auto-panning to more complex panning modulations. Here's a look at the features:
Key Features
- Free, and available for both PC and Mac.
- Creative Modulation Tool: Create complex pan modulations with ease.
- Unique Waveform Drawing Capabilities:Construct your own modulation curves in a very intuitive manner. Waveforms can be easily drawn using soft or hard control points, thus producing gentle transitions or sharp bends in the waveform.
- Customized Waveforms: Up to 10 customized waveforms can be stored.
- LFO Speed: LFO speed can be set free-running from 0.02 Hz to 5.24 kHz. It can also be set in rhythmic units synced to the host sequencer, from a fast 1/128 note modulation up to 32 bars.
- Always in Sync: The LFO will always stay in sync, even when you make tempo changes in your host software, or jump ahead to different parts of your track.
- Complete Parameter Control via Automation: Absolutely everything in PanCake can be automated. Even the shape of the modulating waveform can be automated. And if you want to use more than four modulation curves in a song, you can automate the plugin to switch between them.
- New in version 2: A precise display of channel left/right volume for helpful visual control, an option to trigger the LFO via MIDI notes, a dry/wet control, plus a redesigned interface.

Free Sample Friday: Rhodes Glissandos
" I had a Rhodes open for some adjustments, and realized it made a cool sound to make a glissando across the wiggly-wire part of the tines (not the solid glockenspiel-like bars on top)."
4 different glissandos recorded as one file, so you'll have to split them up yourselves. I've also saved it as an MP3 file to keep the file size down. Thank, Keith!
EDIT: HMM. THERE SEEMED TO BE A PROBLEM WITH THE LINK I POSTED EARLIER, AND I AM ABOUT TO LEAVE FOR THE AIRPORT, SO HERE IS THE LINK TO THE ORIGINAL FILE KEITH SENT ME... https://dl.dropbox.com/u/19409711/rhodes-gliss.wav

For the Love of Home Keyboards
Although we mostly discuss "grown up" keyboards here, I'd be willing to be more than a few of us cut our teeth on one of the hundreds of "home keyboards" that flooded the market in the 80's. Mine was a Casio PT-20. The drum beats were cheesy, it had an auto-chord function, it only played one note at a time, and the handful of preset sounds it could make sounded nothing like the instruments they were supposed to imitate. But at the impressionable age of 11, it helped foster the love of making music that would one day become my career. I had a couple songbooks full of schmaltzy songs from the seventies and I programmed them meticulously into the tiny step sequencer it had. I learned to figure out melodies by ear. I learned to understand song structure. I learned how minor chords and major chords differed. Many years later when I got my first proper synth (a Korg Poly-800), the PT-20 understandably got shelved. It may not have been the latest or the greatest, but it was enough to inspire me to learn, and for that, I'll always be thankful.
