For variation, or mainly for melodies, I'll play real time. You're right though, I should vary my method though, so I think today I'll try to see if Live does the single note advance too.<br />In the past week I've been "studying" Ableton. I've been using it for nigh on 5 years and I had never used the session screen till now.
